GRAND:School shows its prowess at the Columbia Asia-COBRA Tournament

AFTER an enthralling battle for the championship title, SMK  Lembah Keramat came out tops at the Columbia Asia-Cobra  School Rugby Tournament at SMK Puchong Utama (I) on Saturday.
SMK Lembah Keramat beat SMK Seksyen 19, Shah Alam 20-12 in the final. Third place went to SMK Tinggi Kajang.

From a total of 18 schools that participated in the Columbia Asia-Cobra School Rugby Programme since June 16, eight were selected to take part in the tournament which started on June 30 and ended on Saturday.

The event was attended by students from participating schools, teachers, parents, representatives of Columbia Asia and Cobra as well as members of the public.

Free health screenings were provided for the attendees at the event venue, courtesy of Columbia Asia.

The grand trophy was given away by the CEO of Columbia Asia-South East Asia, Kelvin Tan.

Also on hand to give away the prizes was Education Ministry's Malaysian Schools Sports Council  assistant management director, Mohd Hamry Ismail.

The Columbia Asia-Cobra School Rugby Programme was a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. It is a collaborative effort between international private healthcare company Columbia Asia and the Combined Old Boys Rugby Association (COBRA).

The schools involved had shown keen interest in the sport, even though rugby is not considered a core sport in Malaysia, unlike football and badminton.

A total of 18 schools from across the country participated in this programme.

The schools were selected from areas where Columbia Asia hospitals are located in Peninsular Malaysia, namely Taiping, Cheras, Setapak, Puchong, Bukit Rimau in Shah Alam, Seremban and Nusajaya in Johor Baru.

Secondary school students, aged 16 and below, were trained in the game of rugby, guided by Cobra members with cooperation from teachers and coaches in the respective schools. The schools also benefited from health talks and first Aid demonstrations.

With this initiative, the organisers hope that the schools, and eventually the state, will be able to develop better players and continue their interest in the game.
